Fear of needles is known as needle phobia in medical terms and depicts the fear towards medical methods like needles and injections. This fear is also known by other names like aichmophobia or enetophobia, but these are broader terms not usually used. This particular fear or phobia for needles or injections causes the sufferer to avoid blood tests, vaccinations and other serious medical help. The sufferers who are phobic to injections try to get away without receiving medical treatment and totally avoiding it.
There are many types of needle phobia, and they are defined by specific terms. The most common and prevalent type of needle phobia is Vasovagal needle phobia. Half of the needle phobic people are the victims of this particular type of phobia. In Vasovagal phobia, the victim fears the sight, feeling and even the thought of needles or other needle type things. The fear causes lowering of blood pressure and phobic may get faint due to it. The other changes caused in the sufferer by such fear also include sweating, tinnitus, nausea, panic attacks and an initial high blood pressure and later a dip at the time of injection. The lowering of blood pressure due to vasovagal fear can even cause death sometimes.
The second common type of needle phobia is the Associative phobia. In this kind of phobia, the sufferer is afraid due to an earlier traumatic incident of painful treatment involving him or some family member had witnessed which causes fear in him. The negative and tragic experience develops the fear within him, and that shows unexplained strange anxiety, panic attacks and insomnia. In Resistive phobia, the fear for needles and injections develops due to repressive upbringing of the sufferer or a prior incident of needle procedure that involved using physical force or emotional restraint on him. The sufferer apart from the fear of needles also fears being controlled or forced. He experiences high blood pressure, increased heart rate, violent resistance, avoidance, etc.
In Hyperalgesic fear phobia, the sufferer does not fear due to the actual needle but he/she has a hypersensitivity to pain that is inherited and known as Hyperalgesic. For such people, the pain caused due to injections and needles is unbearable, and they cannot stand it. In this type of phobia, the victim experiences extreme anxiety, increased blood pressure and heart rate on the penetration of the needle. It is recommended that anesthesia should be given to such people during the medical procedure involving needles.
